Yang and Zhu held a wedding according to custom and cohabited for five years but did not register the marriage. After separation, Yang sued for return of betrothal gifts. The court held that although not registered, the parties had long-term cohabitation and part of the gifts had been spent on common life, thus ordering partial return of the betrothal gifts.
